Kashrut or Kashruth (in Hebrew כשרות המטבח והמאכלים / kashrout hamitba'h véhamaakhalim, "fit for human consumption”) is the set of Jewish dietary laws and one of the fundamental principles of traditional Jewish life.

It comprises a set of rules for determining whether something is fit or unfit for human consumption, according to the type of food, where it comes from and its method of preparation.

Foodstuffs which conform to these laws are said to be kosher (Hebrew: כשר), which means "fit" for human consumption.
